Adult and Kid-Friendly Snack Box Ideas

A snack box is perfectly portable and ideal for long works day and out of the house adventures. Having healthy snacks on hand so you’re not resorting to convenience options can be a huge lifesaver to ward off those hunger pangs until lunch or dinner time! I’ve created 4 snack box ideas which are both adult and kid-friendly – easily customize with any of the other ideas I’ve listed as well.

4 snack boxes of various colors filled with different snacks on a counter.

Not only is it fun to have a box full of yummy snacks, but helpful too. Below are some ideal situations where an already prepared snack box can make all the difference.

  • If you’re a snacker, bringing a snack box to work ensures you not only have options – but reduces the urge to grab convenience items.
  • They’re super helpful for beach days, pool days, boat excursions, or just long periods of time where you’re going to be out of the house with your kids.
  • A healthier snack box can set both you and/or your children up for success! It might increase your child’s fruit and veggie consumption if these are the only snacks available. From my experience, it’s better than a bag of Doritos.
  • They are actually EASY to throw together and can be prepared in less than 10 minutes. If you make a recipe in bulk, you’ll have leftovers to freeze and pull for future snack boxes.
  • Prioritizing protein in a snack box can help you reach a higher daily protein intake.

Snack Box Storage Containers

I bought these 4-Pack Bento Lunch Boxes from Amazon because they were super cheap and highly rated. They’re stackable and ideal for snack prep! Have fun while shopping for a snack box – because there are so many options available.

There’s even the popular “snackle box” trend where people actually use a tackle box to store a variety of snacks. Something like these Snackle Box Containers would be a fun option, especially for kids.

If your snack box contains items that are not shelf-stable, it’s best to consume them within 2 hours or use an ice pack to keep them cold in your lunch box or diaper bag.

Snack Box Inspiration

I’ve created 4 different snack boxes with recipes that I actually made with my kids! So if they don’t look perfect, that’s why! It gave us something to do and now we are prepped with snacks for a few more weeks.

I can take them to work with me, or on outings on the days when they are home with me. It’s a win-win all around! The best part is that all of these “ideas” were pretty easy to prepare – and some items can be frozen for up to 3 months!

These are ideas for you to use as inspiration! Mix and match any of the items based on your preferences. You could share a snack box with your children, make one for each of you, or they can each have their own.

Snack Box #1

A snack box with diced strawberries, hard-boiled eggs, grapes, granola and a dark chocolate dipping sauce.

This is a sweeter snack box to satisfy a sweet tooth: the fresh fruit can be dipped into the dark chocolate sauce. The sauce is naturally sweetened with dates, which are a good source of fiber and antioxidants. The hard-boiled eggs add some protein to help with satiety.

I used a store-bought granola for convenience. However, a homemade granola with nutrient-dense pumpkin seeds or sunflower seeds would be a great option to prioritize a wide variety of vitamins and minerals.

Snack Box #2

Garlic stuffed olives, sliced cucumbers, a muffin, an oatmeal ball, and chopped walnuts in a lunchable container.

These snacks are a bit of a smorgasbord – but that’s one of my favorite things about snack boxes! You’ve got some sweet options, like an easy whole-grain blueberry muffin using Kodiak Cakes Protein-Packed Muffin Mix. Then you have a fresh vegetable, some healthy fats from the chopped walnuts, and olives to satisfy that salt craving.

Plus, the oatmeal balls are one of my favorite snacks and they can be frozen for up to 3 months. Therefore, make a large batch and throw them in your snack boxes whenever you want! They’re packed with healthy seeds and taste delicious!

Snack Box #3

A portable lunchable container filled with cucumbers, tomatoes, carrots, whole wheat crackers and a Greek yogurt dip.
  • Whole Wheat Triscuit Crackers
  • Greek Yogurt Dip {1/2 cup Greek yogurt + Everything But the Bagel Seasoning + Garlic Powder}
  • Carrots
  • Cucumbers
  • Cherry Tomatoes

This is a “healthy” veggies and dip snack box that prioritizes protein and fiber. Fresh veggies are combined with fiber-rich whole wheat crackers and a Greek yogurt dip for an additional 15 grams of protein! Customize the dip however you like, the sky is the limit! You could make it a “taco” style dip or add some fresh lemon juice and dill.

To make the dip more kid-friendly, add about 2 tablespoons of ranch to it! Or, buy a ranch seasoning packet and combine with Greek yogurt. Look for a higher protein plant-based yogurt like Kite Hill Greek Style for a dairy-free substitute.

Snack Box #4

A snack box with 5 compartments containing cheerio peanut butter bars, oatmeal balls, salami, whole what crackers and olives.

There doesn’t need to be a method to the madness when it comes to snack boxes – just add whatever you like! The cheerio bars are so simple and made with just 3 ingredients. I then added the oatmeal balls from snack box #3 with salami, crackers and olives.

Each component offers a little something different. The salami, oatmeal balls, and cheerio bars provide additional protein and are definitely kid-approved!

Happy Snacking

Snack boxes are a fun and exciting way to set you and your kids up for successful snacking. I find that the more you do it, the easier it becomes – even if it feels like a pain in the butt at first. A warning if you do this with your kids, though: they might start requesting “snack boxes” because they enjoy them so much!
