This recipe was inspired by a recent trip to Coldstone. They have a new signature creation with similar flavors and I became obsessed. If you enjoyed this recipe, be sure to also try my Tajín Yogurt Parfaits.

Wake up on a beautiful summer morning and enjoy this healthy and delicious breakfast! Or, if you are feeling a little down in the winter months, these vibrant flavors will make you feel like you’re on vacation.

Reasons to Try This Smoothie Bowl

  • Bright, refreshing and delicious! The sweet, tropical flavors give vacation vibes and that chili lime seasoning adds a little unexpected depth of flavor.
  • It only takes 5 minutes and it’s more filling than a smoothie itself. The base of this recipe is already broken down, like a smoothie, but the additional toppings increase the satiety of this meal. It takes awhile to eat as well so it will likely keep you fuller for longer.
  • Healthy and high in protein. I add 1 scoop of unflavored protein powder, and each serving has 28 grams of protein and almost 6 grams of fiber! It’s an easy way to increase your fruit consumption and fill in nutritient gaps.

How to Make a Tajin Tropical Smoothie Bowl

A unique smoothie bowl with bright, bold and balanced flavors. There is just something about frozen tropical fruit combined with Tajín for that signature tangy-salty kick. It’s topped with juicy diced mango, a dollop of whipped cream for a touch of indulgence, and salted pepitas for the perfect crunchy finish.

The only time I really enjoy a smoothie bowl is with fun flavor combinations like this! It reminds be of a beach vacation in a bowl.

Ingredients

This recipe makes just one serving.

The ingredients for the tropical smoothie bowl with text for each one.
  • 1 1/2 cups frozen tropical fruit medley. I used a combination of peaches, pineapple, mangoes and strawberries.
  • 1/4 cup of preferred milk. Or more, as needed, if blender gets stuck.
  • 1 teaspoon of Tajín seasoning, divided.
  • 1 tablespoon honey or preferred sweetener.
  • 1 scoop of unflavored protein powder, optional. I used Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides.
  • Diced mango, for topping.
  • Salted pepitas, for texture and crunch.

More customizations below!

This bowl is so fun because you can customize it in so many ways. My ultimate combination? Topping with more Tajín, a little granola, diced mango, whipped cream, and a drizzle of hot honey!

Customizable Ideas

Fresh & Fruity Garnishes

  • Pineapple chunks (fresh or lightly grilled) – complements the tropical theme and the zing of Tajín.
  • Sliced kiwi – adds color and a tart contrast.
  • Pomegranate arils – for a sweet-tart pop and visual contrast.
  • Dragon fruit cubes – vibrant and tropical.

Crunch & Texture

  • Toasted coconut flakes. A tropical, slightly sweet crunch that pairs well with Tajín.
  • Chopped roasted peanuts or cashews for salty crunch; peanuts go especially well with Tajín and mango.
  • Granola – a classic topping.
  • Chia seeds for additional fiber.

Flavor Boosters

  • Lime zest or a lime wedge.
  • A drizzle of hot honey.

Optional Finishing Touches

  • Mint or cilantro leaves – small amount for a fresh, herbaceous note.
  • Extra sprinkle of Tajín on top.
  • A swirl of Greek yogurt, whipped cream, or coconut cream. I love to put two tablespoons of whipped cream on top!

Directions

  1. Dice a fresh mango into cubes and set aside.
  2. Add milk, frozen fruit, honey and 1/2 teaspoon of Tajín seasoning to a high-powered blender. Stop and stir often if the blender is getting stuck. Add milk 1 tablespoon at a time, if needed, and then blend again.
  3. Once the smoothie bowl mixture has a thick, smooth consistency, add the protein powder. Blend until once again smooth.
  4. Pour the smoothie bowl mixture into a bowl. Top with diced mango, salted pepitas, 1/2 teaspoon of Tajín seasoning (or adjust to your preference), and a dollop of whipped cream. Consume immediately and enjoy!

Tips for Success

  • If it’s too thick, add a splash of milk until desired consistency. If not thick enough, add a couple pieces of fruit to blender at a time until thicker consistency is reached.
  • A tamper helps push ingredients down without needing more liquid. If you don’t have one, pause to scrape down the sides regularly.
  • Blenders like a Vitamix or Ninja can handle thick blends better. If using a standard blender, stop and stir often or pulse to avoid motor strain.
  • Start with about ¼ to ½ cup of milk for every 1½–2 cups of frozen fruit. Add more 1 tablespoon at a time only if needed to get things moving.
